As we begin John 10, Jesus begins to use these I AM statements with regularity. He is showing the people of Israel, that He is willing to become whatever they need him to become to restore and redeem them back to God. In John 10, it is clear that the people in Israel need a shepherd. They are being led astray by the Pharisees and the religious leaders, so Jesus will step up and become the Good Shepherd.
